Albert Banfield Capron enlisted as a corporal in the 33rd Illinois Infantry at the
outbreak of the Civil War. He later was transferred as a captain to the 11th Cavalry
under his father's command, and was elevated to the rank of colonel. He returned to
his adopted hometown of Winnetka and raised three children -- Horace, Albert, and
Florence. He died of pneumonia in 1890.
So many Capron family members joined the military that they were collectively known
as the "Fighting Caprons".
