Automobile Executive, Advertising Executive. Founder of the Jordan Automobile 
Company, Cleveland, Ohio in 1916. After a career of working in advertising and 
journalism, Jordan found the Jordan Automobile Company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1916. 
Unlike other automobile manufacturers, Jordan’s business plan for company involved 
using outsourced parts from various auto suppliers, which were shipped to his 
Cleveland, Ohio plant, and then assembled into an automobile. Doing this, Jordan felt, 
would free up capital spent on castings and stampings and allow the company to 
focus on low volume, high style automobiles. According to Jordan, his inspiration for 
the Jordan model that made the company a real contender was while dancing with one 
Eleanor Borton at a country club dance outside of Cleveland. While dancing with 
Borton, the student at Smith college asked why automobile manufactures hadn’t 
created a “car for the girl who loves to swim, paddle and shoot and for the boy who 
loves the roar of the cut-out.” Jordan took the idea and immediately designed a low 
slung lithe roadster, naming it the Playboy. However it was Jordon’s poetic 1923 
“Somewhere West of Laramie” for the Playboy that cemented his genius, and changed 
automobile advertising from the dry statement of facts. Henceforth, automobile ads 
would entice. Following the closure of Jordan’s automotive factory, he ultimately 
ended up in professional advertising. Following his death, he was cremated, and the 
ashes given to a family member.
