SUDDEN DEATH OF HORACE A. SMITH

Popular County Attorney succumbs to heart trouble in Oklahoma City.

Morning news brought news of the sudden death of Hon. Horace A. Smith, a victim of 
heart trouble in Oklahoma City. As County attorney he had gone to Oklahoma City 
Sunday night to appear in a case before a criminal court of appeals Monday morning. 
All day Sunday he had driven in Autry Township with commissioner McGill securing 
affidavits for the case Monday morning returning Sunday evening an hour before the 
trains in the best of spirits and feeling exceptionally good, for the past year Judge 
Smith had been in ill health. Judge Smith was born January 7, 1860 on a farm in 
Northern Illinois where he was reared and educated in the common schools. When the 
family moved to Missouri after the war, in which his father had served with the Union; 
he attended the University of Missouri graduating in law he practiced for a time in 
Eldorado Springs, Missouri. Then he went to Coldwater, Kansas, and then onto El 
Reno, Oklahoma, when this territory was opened to settlement. He came to Perry with 
the opening of the Cherokee Strip and has since made this his home here practicing 
his profession. He was married in 1897 to Miss Mabel Dean of Arkansas City, Kansas, 
and by this union a son, Adrian was born now eighteen years old, one child died in 
infancy. He was elected probate judge of our county and re-elected later he was 
elected county attorney and twice re-elected. The funeral services were held from the 
home in North Perry yesterday afternoon the Rev. Horn of the Christian church 
delivering the sermon. The local Masons were in charge of the ceremonies at the 
grave in Grace Hill Cemetery. The funeral was attended by two brother of Mrs. Smith 
and a sister. The aged father of Mr. Smith age 89 years of Illinois was unable to 
attend. George Lynch a brother in law of Butler, Missouri was also present.
