obit in file summary moved to Kenosha, Wis. when small boy. Grad Kenosha HS, 
studied law Racine, Wis., when civil war broke out was principal of a ward school, 
resigned to enlist as private in 1st Wis. Cavalry, appt'd Orderly Sgt., wet to Benton 
Barracks, Mo., then Cape Girardeau, given furlough, commissioned as 2d lt., tfr'd to 
Co. I, 33rd Rgmt, Wis. Vol. inf. Nov 1862, placed in command at Fort Pickering, Feb 
1863 reported to his rgmt at Moscow, Tenn., in April marched to Memphis, embarked 
for Vicksburg in May, served during siege, discharged for disablility, returned hime July 
13, 1863, regained health, re-enlisted as private in 16th Wis. Inf, rejoined rgmt in front 
of Petersburg. 27 Sep 1864 commissioned as 1st Lt, Co B, 38th Rgmt, then captain, 
mustered out Sept 11, 1865 at Washington DC, Was in 12 battles. On return home, 
moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, principal of ward school, then moved to Floyd Co., 
teacher, then elected co. sch. superintendent, then deputy superintendent of public 
instruction for state of Iowa. Admitted to the bar of Iowa 31 Jan 1871, practiced law, 
then in newspaper business, then health failed. Seeking warmer climate came to 
Chandler, Okla., then to Iowa, then to Caldwell, Iowa. Royal Arch Mason, Odd Fellow, 
Modern Woodman, church mbr 40 years, teacher and superintendent of Sunday 
schools
