Merle was born in Star, Idaho to Romanta (Ira) and Jessie May George Nelson. He 
spent his childhood and youth in the Star area. Merle served in the South pacific 
during WW II as part of the 43rd Corps of Engineers.

He met and married the love of his life, Wanda Nichols on October 17,1948 in 
Ironside, Oregon. Merle lived in the Willamette Valley for 54 years residing in Lacomb, 
Marion and Salem. Merle and Wanda moved to Baker City in the fall of 2009.

Throughout his life Merle enjoyed customizing his homes, working in his workshop, 
spending time with family, traveling and playing pinochle. RVing was a passion that 
took Merle and Wanda to every state, except Hawaii, and every province in Canada. 
They were members of the Salem Jolly Wheelers. Merle was a life member of the 
American Legion, Good Sam Club and Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Wanda, and four sons: Ross of St 
Petersburg, FL, Grant (Michelle) of Gulfport, FL, Lloyd (Janice) of Baker City, Larry 
(Cathy) of Albany, and sister-in-law, Donna Nichols Duncan and her husband, Verne. 
Merle leaves ten grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Preceding Merle in death 
are his parents and siblings, Walter, George, Ethel Burkes, James Edward (Ed), 
Ernest, Ross, Clarence and sister-in-law Deanna Nichols. Graveside services will be 
conducted August 10, 2013, 10:30 MDT in the Valley View Cemetery in Vale, Oregon.
