AMHERST - Ruby (Almgren) Costa, 89, died Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the Center 
for Extended Care in Amherst.Born July 24, 1925, in Springfield, she was the daughter 
of the late John and Gertrude (Guy) Almgren. She went to Springfield schools and 
graduated from American International College and the University of 
Massachusetts.Ruby was a special education teacher who started her career working 
in Vermont and Longmeadow. She then taught in South Hadley for 30 years until she 
retired.Ruby was on the committee to make UMass a state university. She was a 
member of the retired teachers of Hampshire County, a cub scout leader trainer for 
many years, a 65 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the 
White Shrine and Ream.Ruby was predeceased by her husband Armand Costa and her 
brother John Almgren. Ruby leaves her sons Edward and his wife Theresa of Auburn, 
James and his wife Mary of California, and Leonard and his Wife Margaret of Amherst; 
daughters Cynthia Hutton and her husband Kirk of Arizona, and Lucinda Reinhold and 
her husband Kurt of Amherst; sister Alma Gordon and her husband Lewis of Maine; 12 
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.An in house 
service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton, 
burial will follow at Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield. Calling hours will precede 
the service Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. Memorials can be made to the Shriners, 516
