Dorette Irene Comings January 12, 1916 ~ December 9, 2010 Carmel Valley - Dorette 
I. Comings, born January 12, 1916, slipped away peacefully in her sleep at home on 
December 9. Born in Hanover, Germany, she later moved to Hamburg, Germany to live 
with her adopted parents, Walter and Freida Muller. Dorette received her schooling as 
a music teacher while in Hamburg. For several years, Dorette chose to work as a 
governess in her home town. Shortly after World War II ended, while traveling to the 
United States, Dorette met her dear, beloved friend, Julia Weinburg. Together they 
lived in New York and worked at various secretarial jobs. In the mid 1950's, Dorette 
and Julia ventured out to the West Coast and ended up living in Carmel where Dorette 
opened her own kindergarten music school. Her interest in church led her to attend a 
small group called the Christian Brethren that met in Carmel. This is where she met her 
husband of 38 years, Richard Comings. In 1961, they adopted their first daughter, 
Heidi Comings and, many years later, their second daughter, Cornelia Wilson. 
Dorette's life was filled with raising her family and teaching music out of her home. Her 
faith led her to different devotional groups including Martha Maria and Friendship Bible 
Coffee. Dorette's affinity for music created another group, Piano Plus, which still 
meets once a month. Dorette also enjoyed a sign language group that met in her 
home. Dorette's name means "gift" and she loved giving the gift of singing Happy 
Birthday to all the people who touched her life. She will be missed by many. The family 
would like to thank all those who helped care for her in her final days. Donations may
