WESTGATE - Shirley N. Hurd, 78, of Westgate, died at her home on Friday morning, 
Sept. 26, 2008, after a lengthy illness. 

 Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 
Westgate. Officiating: The Rev. Timothy E. Parker. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. 
today, Sept. 29, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Maynard, and after 9:30 a.m. 
Tuesday at the church. Interment: Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard. 

 Memorials may be given in her name to St. Peter Lutheran Church of Westgate or the 
Westgate Community Building. 

 Shirley is survived by: husband, Lawrence Hurd of Westgate; daughter, Carolyn 
(Scott) Bly of Mooresville, N.C.; three sons, Mike (Mary) Hurd of Marshalltown, Chuck 
(Becky) Hurd of Westgate and Larry Hurd of Oelwein; four grandchildren, Jason Hurd, 
Brenda Bunn, Annie Burt and Laura Parker; six great-grandchildren, Bryan Hurd, Tyler 
Hurd, Lauryn Bunn, Carter Bunn, Piper Burt and Lachlan Burt; brother, Robert Lockard 
of St. Paul, Minn.; three sisters, Marjorie (Jim) Hawkins of Ankeny, Carol (Steve) 
Kennon of Oelwein and Linda Leal of Austin, Texas; special friend, Kraig Hron of 
Oelwein. 

 She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Evelyn Lockard; and a brother, 
Russell Lockard. 

 Shirley Norine Lockard was born on Sept. 12, 1930, at Oelwein, the daughter of 
Frank Eugene and Evelyn Rosella (Lau) Lockard. She attended school at St. Peter 
Lutheran School, Westgate, and graduated from Maynard High School, Maynard, in 
1948. Shirley married Lawrence Hurd on Sept. 11, 1949, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 
Maynard. She was a mother, homemaker, farmed together with her husband, 
Lawrence, for 10 years in the Maynard area before moving to Westgate where she 
was a business partner of 38 years at Hurd Welding and Repair, Westgate. Shirley 
was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Westgate, past treasurer for the City of 
Westgate, and was past president of the Iowa Blacksmith and Welders Association 
Auxiliary.
