Edward William Brown, 82, civic and industrial leader of Rockford for 60 years, died at 
5:25 p.m. yesterday at his home, 312 S. 3rd street. He was stricken Sunday evening 
with a cerebral embolism and became steadily weaker until he died in his sleep 
yesterday afternoon. His three daughters and a number of his grandchildren were at 
the bedside. 
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home. The Rev. John Gordon, 
pastor of the Second Congregational church, will officiate, burial will be in the family 
lot in Greenwood cemetery, where his father, the late circuit judge William Brown, and 
mother are buried.
As mayor of Rockford for three terms in the 'nineties, agent for the Illinois Central 
railroad for 41 years, member and president of the Rockford park board for many 
years, director of the Rockford Chamber of Commerce, and founder of industries, Mr. 
Brown for six decades was one of the most active men in Rockford's civic and 
industrial life.
To Mr. Brown is credited much of the industrial development of the southeast. As 
agent of the Illinois Central railroad, he wooed and won industries for Rockford. He 
induced them to locate along the right-of-way of the Illinois Central which ran through 
the southeast part of the city.
"Secured Railroad for City"
He and his father, then Circuit Judge of Winnebago county, were principally 
instrumental in bringing the Illinois Central railroad through Rockford after the directors 
of the company had laid out the right-of-way to avoid the city. This was in 1884, and 
when the railroad company had been convinced it should include Rockford on it's 
route, the younger Mr. Brown was selected to buy the necessary right-of-way. From 
that time until his seventieth birthday, Aug. 8, 1927, Mr. Brown was general agent for 
Illinois Central in Rockford.
