Rawson Bennett became an ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1927, earned an M.S. in 
electronic engineering at the University of California in 1937, and rose through the 
ranks to become a rear admiral in 1956. He served as chief of naval research in 
Washington, D.C., from 1956 through 1961 and then became senior vice president 
and director of engineering for Sangamo Electric Co. in 1961.

Legion of Merit
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion 
of Merit to Captain Rawson Bennett, II (NSN: 0-61074), United States Navy, for 
exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the 
Government of the United States while serving in the Bureau of Ships from November 
1941 to February 1945, as Head of the Underwater Sound Section and later as Group 
Head in charge of the Sonar, Communication Equipment and Special Application 
Sections, performing his duties in an outstandingly meritorious manner. His leadership 
and brilliant technical accomplishments in the design of sonic and supersonic 
underwater sound apparatus urgently required by the Fleet constituted significant 
contributions to winning the "Battle of the Atlantic." Our destruction of the Axis 
undersea fleet, and the operation of our own submarines against Japanese shipping 
were aided materially by the equipment developed under Captain Bennett's direction. 
His individual part in the development of these valuable equipments, his zeal and his 
unswerving devotion to duty resulted in the distinguished completion of a task of great 
magnitude and importance to the successful prosecution of World War II and to the 
welfare of the United States.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold 
Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Rear Admiral Rawson Bennett, 
II (NSN: 0-61074), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the 
performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief 
of Naval Research from January 1956 to December 1960. Exercising the highest order 
of judgment and wise management, Rear Admiral Bennett has insured the maximum 
scientific and engineering advancement of the Navy. He has been responsible for the 
high order of enthusiasm and morale among the scientific and engineering personnel 
of the offices and laboratories under his management. He has insured the maximum 
possible effectiveness of limited resources of men and money. By his personal 
professional achievements, Rear Admiral Bennett has reflected great credit to the 
Navy throughout the scientific community. Through his actions and those inspired in 
his staff, Rear Admiral Bennett has maintained and enhanced the outstanding 
reputation of the Navy in research nationally and internationally. His dynamic and 
outstanding leadership reflect great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the 
highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
