Fred served his country during the Second World War, serving as a private in 
Company L, 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, United States Army. He 
was promoted to Private First Class, while attached to the 1530th S. C. U. Patients 
Section, Billings General Hospital, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.

He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

He was survived by former wife Barbara Jean (Berrard) Herbert, a daughter and a son, 
and mother Winifred (Blanchard) (Herbert) Sunquiest.
