John F. Tesar, 80, a band director and teacher at Hopkins High School for 31 years, 
died of heart failure Saturday at his home in Orono. 

 He was born in Two Harbors, Minn., and graduated from the University of 
Minnesota-Duluth in the early 1930s. 

 He moved to Thompson, Iowa, where he was band director for nine years. Then he 
returned to the Twin Cities to teach at Hopkins High, where he also was band director 
31 years. 

 He was known to many students as "Uncle John." He retired in 1977. Tesar also 
played saxophone and clarinet for the Starlite Trio at the Town and Country Club in St. 
Paul for 14 years. After retiring from teaching, he worked for Aetna and HealthPartners 
in the mail room until poor health forced him to quit in March. Tesar was a member of 
the Minneapolis Musicians' Union, the Mound Lions Club, the Hopkins Elks Club and 
St. John's Lutheran Church in Mound. 

 He was preceded in death by his first wife, Zelta. He is survived by his wife of 19 
years, Frances; sons John, of Minnetonka; Jon, of Minneapolis, and Jeffrey, of 
Minneapolis; a daughter Andrea Child, of Minneapolis; stepchildren Donna F. 
Anderson, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Sandra Reed, of Wayzata; Robert E. Wilson, of Orono; 
Richard E C. Wilson, of Long Lake, and Michael S. Wilson, of Eden Prairie; 15 
grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday. 
Arrangements were by the Huber Funeral Home, Mound Chapel.
