Charles W. (Bill) Hawley, 78, Aurora, Colo., died May 1, 2003, following a long illness.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Prairie View Cemetery,
Manville, Wyo., with the Rev. Larry Bartlett presiding. A light lunch will be served after
the services. A memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Underwood
Senior Center. Family and friends are invited to gather for lunch, fellowship and to
share memories.
Charles was born April 12, 1925 (Easter Sunday) near Walsenberg, Colo., the eldest
child of Charles C. and Caroline (Bastian) Hawley. The family moved to a farm north of
Underwood, where Charles attended country school and then high school in Turtle
Lake. In 1942, he joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific, returning home
after the war ended.
On June 5, 1947, Charles married Irene Enyart. They farmed in various locations,
spending eight years south of Baldwin and 20 years south of Goodrich. Following the
sale of that farm, they moved to Bismarck and then to Denver, where Charles worked
at construction. They later moved to Port St. Lucie, Fla., where he helped rebuild the
Club Med and worked at other construction.
Charles and Irene retired and eventually moved to Lusk, Wyo. Irene died of a brain
tumor in 1996, with Charles caring for her at home with the help of family, friends and
Home Health. They had been married for over 50 years.
In September 1997, Charles married his friend and neighbor, Verna Pfister. They later
built a home in Aurora, Colo., and enjoyed their time together. Charles developed
Alzheimer's and suffered strokes and a heart attack. Verna cared for him at home as
long as possible and continued her devoted caretaking when he entered a care
center, where he passed away.
He is survived by a large, loving family including his seven children, Charlotte (Larry)
Martin, Bismarck, Charles Hawley, Appleton, Wis., Ruth (Robert-deceased) Hecker,
Aurora, Mark (Beth Hall) Hawley, Montrose, Colo., Steven (Shani) Hawley, Sumner,
Wash., Raymond (Roxanne) Hawley, Devils Lake, and Linda Hawley, Mandan; four
stepchildren, Judy (Jon) Van Wagoner, Anaheim, Calif., Jack (Debbie) Pfister, Craig,
Colo., David (Brenda) Pfister, Thornton, Colo., and Gary (Marian) Pfister, Petersburg,
Va.; five brothers, Edward Hawley, Longview, Wash., Richard (Sweet P) Hawley,
Powell, Wyo., Donald (Esther) Hawley, Alder, Mont., James (Sherry) Hawley,

Quenzer, Lead, S.D., Pauline Enyart, Mandan, Arlene Arends, Lusk, Wyo., Carol

Wheatland, Wyo.; one brother-in-law, Larry Cox, Chadron, Neb.; 28 grandchildren; 19
great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles especially enjoyed children (and they enjoyed him) and loved his diverse
family. All of the grandchildren will be considered honorary pallbearers.
