Richard, age 82, of Fort Lee, on January 28, 2011. An instrumental music teacher in 
the Cliffside Park School System for nearly 40 years. A tennis teaching professional at 
the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, NY; Farview Country Club in Greenwich, CT; 
Alpine Country Club in Demarest, NJ; and Mountain Ridge Country Club in West 
Caldwell, NJ. Host of the Vision Cable TV Show "Tennis with Thompson." An ASCAP 
Member Music Composer with over 300 songs including a published and radio played 
song "I wish I could see you again." An Entrepreneur with a tennis teaching record 
that he made with Arthur Ashe and inventor of "Jet Ball" and the "Rocker Exerciser" 
and several board games. Received his Graduate and Masters Degree from NYU 
where he was a member of their last football team and a scholarship tennis player 
where he lost only three out of 40 matches played. Played at the National Tennis 
Championships at Forest Hills and the National Tennis Indoors in NYC. A Member of 
Lee Main Street Senior Citizens and AARP where he will be remembered for singing 
"God Bless America" to open the events. Member of the Fort Lee Historic Society, 
Member of the Committee that built the Fort Lee Youth Center, Trustee at Bethany 
United Methodist Church, Fort Lee, Former President and three time elected Member 
of the Fort Lee Board of Education, Former Officer and Member of the Fort Lee 
Homeowner's Organization, Former Member of the Palisades Interstate Park 
Committee, Former Member of the Fort Lee Housing Authority, Former President of the 
7th Regiment Tennis Club. He started the tennis teaching clinics in Fort Lee in 1960. 
He leaves behind his loving wife Dorothy "Joan" Thompson, two daughters Diane and 
Beverly and son Douglas; His son-in-law Thomas Salierno and several grandchildren. 
He is also survived by his younger brother Donald Thompson and his sister-in-law Mary 
Thompson. Mr. Thompson had many loves in his life: his devotion to his family and his 
church, his devotion to the community of Fort Lee and Cliffside Park, his devotion to 
his country and his devotion to music and tennis. In lieu of flowers donations can be 
given to the Bethany United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 430 Main Street, Fort 
Lee, NJ 07024. The family will receive their friends on Sunday 3-6 PM at the Frank A. 
Patti and Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home 327 Main Street "opposite the Fort Lee
