Elizabeth 'Ba' Burnham, 93 


OCT. 29, 1916 — FEB. 20, 2010 

 Elizabeth "Ba" Burnham passed away peacefully the morning of February 20th, 2010, 
at the age of 93. She had battled Parkinson's and dementia for many years. 

 Elizabeth was born in Mexia, Texas, October 29, 1916. Her parents were Edward 
Lawrence and Kathleen Corley Howard. She grew up on a farm between Dallas and 
Fort Worth. Exceptionally bright, she graduated from high school at fourteen and 
graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas at the age of sixteen. She was 
married to John Burnham for 29 years. 

 Elizabeth Burnham lived on East 5th St. in Bloomington for many years until she had 
to move to North Carolina for her health in 1998. She was a member of Trinity 
Episcopal Church and was active in the League of Women Voters and many volunteer 
groups. She was a regular fixture at IU Music School concerts and at campus events. 
Her farm in Greene County was dear to her heart, and she was a familiar sight at the 
Bloomington farmers' market, selling her farm's vegetables and strawberries at her 
regular spot. She worked in the IU Anatomy and Physiology Department assisting with 
brain stem research. She enjoyed playing "mother" to many IU students who worked 
with her, boarded at her house or came over for music gatherings. 

 She is survived by her 6 children: Edward L. of Portland, OR; William of Ann Arbor, 
MI; John T. of Bloomington, IN; James of Oak Ridge, TN; Elizabeth of Scottsdale, AZ; 
and Helen Hatch of Kings Mountain, NC; 9 grandchildren, Melissa Thomas of Atlanta, 
GA; Emily of Decatur, GA; Margaret Head of Bloomington, IN; Jonas of Knoxville, TN; 
Chelsea, Alana, and Alexis of Oak Ridge; and 7 great-grandchildren, Mathew and 
John Burnham, and Elizabeth and Christopher Gavel of Atlanta, GA; and Samantha, 
Nichole, and Andrea Head of Bloomington, IN. 

 In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Trinity Episcopal 
Church in Bloomington.
