RAPID CITY - William O. Thompson, 76, of Rapid City, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at 
his home. 

 William Oxley Thompson was born in Toledo, Ohio, on July 26, 1925, to Ronald W. 
and Mary Evans Thompson. 

 He was an Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. He married Mary 
Allyn Thompson in 1946 and graduated from THE Ohio State University in 1950. 

 Mr. Thompson initially worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber in Akron, Ohio. They 
moved to Rapid City with C.P. Clare and Company in 1967 and considered Rapid City 
to be The Nordic Paradise. Later they acquired Electro-Craft, which became The New 
Phone Company. Mr. Thompson expanded the services of The New Phone Company to 
include mobile telephone, paging and answering services. The New Phone Company 
was sold in 1985 and he retired. 

 Mr. Thompson was very active in the community, serving on the initial committee to 
merge the hospitals into Rapid City Regional Hospital and serving on the boards of the 
Black Hills Workshop, Salvation Army, and Boys' Club. He was also a member of 
Rotary, the First Congregational Church, and Arrowhead Country Club. 

 He is survived by his wife, Mary, and his four children, of whom he was very proud, 
Linda Dean of Fairfax County, Virginia, Susan Thompson of Littleton, Colorado; W.O. 
Thompson Jr. of Casper, Wyoming, and Robert Thompson of Atlanta, Georgia; their 
spouses; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his 
three brothers, Ronald, Thomas and Jack. 

 Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 7, at Black Hills National Cemetery near 
Sturgis, with Rev. Ted Huffman officiating. Friends may gather at the funeral home for 
procession to the cemetery at 1:20 p.m. 

 A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at the First 
Congregational Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Ted Huffman officiating. 

 Donations may be sent to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in lieu of flowers. 

 Arrangements are under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
