Note: Colonel Ode C. Nichols led a long and colorful life. He was a native of Illinois 
and crossed the prairie with his family in 1879 in a covered wagon, meeting Jesse and 
Frank James along the way. In 1890 in Dennison, Texas he became the newspaper 
editor and educated himself. Later in Indian Territory he became partners with author 
Will Durant in his newspaper the "Durant Eagle". He joined Roosevelt's 1st Volunteer 
Cavalry and was one of the Rough Riders. The war in Cuba ended before his 
squadron could sail. He then joined the 34th Volunteer Infantry and in a few months 
rose from Private to Lieutenant. After considerable campaigning in the Philippines he 
was commissioned as an officer in the regular army. He served throughout the 
Spanish-American War, in the Mexican border actions against Pancho Villa and in 
World War I. He ended his thirty-year career as the commanding officer of the 1st 
Infantry Regiment in Fort D.A. Russell in Wyoming. He died in southern California in 
1949.
