CHATHAM - Thomas Howell, 80, died Tuesday at Liberty Commons Nursing Home, 
Chatham. 

 He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Stendahl) Damman. 

 Born in New Orleans, La., Mr. Howell earned a bachelor's degree from Louisiana 
State University and a doctorate from the University of California-Berkeley. He was a 
longtime zoology professor at the University of California-Los Angeles. 

 He received numerous awards and was president of the American Ornithologists' 
Union from 1983 to 1984. His research took him to many exotic places, where he 
studied the nesting and incubation habits of birds. His findings were often published in 
journals including National Geographic, Audubon and Natural History. He was a guest 
expert on "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau". 

 Mr. Howell loved nature and fine dining, and especially loved oysters, soft-shell crab, 
coffee and wine. He appreciated classical music, especially Mozart. 

 Survivors include a son, Thomas R. Howell Jr. of Berkeley, Calif.; and two daughters, 
Yvonne Howell of Richmond, Va., and Heidi Howell of Brewster.
