Marjorie Johnson Adair died peacefully at the Lodge Care Center on June 2, 2014 at 
6:30 p.m. after suffering from congestive heart failure. Marjorie was born May 7, 1923, 
in Dayton. She grew up in Xenia, the only child of Elroy and Edith Johnson. A lover of 
arts and nature, she thrived and grew up attending local schools in Xenia. After 
graduating from high school, she attended Ohio Wesleyan and The Chicago School of 
Art and Design. She studied and taught piano, and was a wonderful illustrator. She 
married the love of her life, David Nichols Adair, in April of 1944, while he was on 
leave from the Navy in World War II. During her first pregnancy and soon to deliver, 
she received word that her husband's ship had been sunk off Okinawa, Japan. For 
days after, she didn't know if the father of her son had survived. They were reunited 
at war's end. In 1950, she and David moved to Wilmington and raised a family of 
three. She spent her career life as an interior designer for the David Adair Furniture 
Co., a family business that she and David ran successfully for more than 50 years. As 
a partner, Marjorie was instrumental in the store's success with her talent for 
decorating, knowledge of the industry, and creation of a busy gift department. Their 
beautiful store became a centerpiece of downtown Wilmington. In 1964, she survived 
a brain aneurysm, and later, two heart attacks, and continued to live to the age of 91 
years. Marjorie was a small woman with a big presence. She had a flair for color and 
fashion, a big smile and warm welcome for friends and family. She had a big heart and 
shared it fully with her large family, friends and clients. Her home was her sanctuary, 
with her creativity and decorating talent displayed throughout. After her husband's 
death in 2004, Marjorie moved out of her lovely home to Cape May, and later to 
Cincinnati, to be near her daughter, Robyn, at The Lodge Retirement Community. She 
is survived by her sons, David (Barbara York) of Burlington, Vt., Mark (Vivienne) of 
Worcester Vt., and daughter, Robyn (Frederick Lewton) of Loveland. She leaves three 
grandchildren, Peter Maupin and Adam Lewton of Loveland, and Molly Ferretti of 
Tempe, Ariz. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 8 at 3 p.m. at the Oratory at
