James Adair of Newton, an educational specialist, died Monday at home surrounded 
by family after a two-year bout with cancer. He was 55. 

 Born in Cincinnati, he grew up in Ohio, New York, Oklahoma and California. He 
earned a bachelor's degree from Denison University and his doctorate in educational 
research from Boston College. 

 Mr. Adair most recently served as manager of worldwide certification exam 
development for Lotus Certification. He began his career working as a research 
assistant in the research and planning department of the Newton public schools. 

 From 1981 to 1987, he was an associate professor of Computer Information Systems 
at Bentley College and wrote several computer books. Mr. Adair spent the following 
five years as a project manager and consultant to the Harvard School of Public Health 
and a visiting lecturer at Bryant College. 

 Later, he served as an educational specialist for Lotus Education and Synetics. He 
worked at Lotus/IBM for the past 10 years. 

 A pioneer in the effort to develop performance-based testing, especially for the 
information technology industry, he was a leader throughout his career in the 
Association of Test Publishers. 

 Active in local Newton sports, he coached soccer and baseball teams for several 
years. He also worked with Hunnewell Hill neighborhood activists to attain a noise 
barrier from the nearby Mass Pike. 

 In the last six months of his life, he traveled with his family to Europe, Florida and 
Cape Cod, and attended many concerts and sports events. 

 Mr. Adair is survived by his wife, Patricia; a son, Evan of Newton; a daughter, Susan 
of Newton; three sisters, Jane of Long Beach, Calif., Elizabeth Little of Richmond, 
Va., and Geraldine Taylor of Sudbury; and several nieces and nephews. 

 A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at Our Lady Help of Christians 
Church, Newton. 

 Burial will be in Newton Cemetery.
