Marjorie Holmes Flory 

HARLINGEN, TX. - Marjorie Holmes Flory died at home in Harlingen on Friday, 
November 23, 2012. She was 89 years old. 

Mrs. Flory was born in Shenandoah, Iowa to Howard and Hazel Gwynn Holmes. She 
attended the University of Nebraska where she met her husband, Dr. David Flory who 
preceded her in death. 

The couple moved to the Valley, where Dr. Flory began his medical practice in 1954. 
Mrs. Flory served as member or volunteer with, among others, the Valley Baptist 
Medical Auxiliary, the Junior Service League and St. Alban's Episcopal Church. She 
was a Director of Planned Parenthood. 

She is remembered by many as the founder, with her lifelong friend Dottie Jones, of 
The Bookmark, an Independent bookstore which during the '70s and '80s was a 
Harlingen landmark for readers from across the Valley. 

She is survived by her daughter, Anne, sons, Tom and Mark, and seven 
grandchildren. 

Her children are grateful for the assistance at the end from Odyssey Hospice and to 
Irma Gonzales for her years caring for their mother. 

A private memorial service is planned at a later date.
