Rupert G. Minns Jr., 82, a 50-year resident of Peninsula, beloved husband of Edith 
(nee Paige); loving father of Jeffrey (Joy) Minns, Sue (Dennis) Leipold, the late Mark 
Minns, Greg (Tina) Minns, Roger (Dolly) Minns, and Mariedith (Ken) Massey; dear 
grandfather of Ben, Kim, Andy, Jen, Jason, Morgan, Hunter, Alex, Natalie, Emily, and 
David; great-grandfather of five; and dear brother of the late Rosemary Graf, died 
Monday, May 9, 2005. 

Rupert served in the U.S. Army. Between 1983 and 2000, Rupert and his wife 
sponsored 21 exchange students and nine exchange grandchildren from many 
countries in Europe. Rupert was also a longtime member of Peninsula United 
Methodist Church, where he was the former finance chairman. He was the voice of the 
Woodridge Bulldogs for 45 years (1955-1990). Rupert was a graduate of West High 
School in Akron and was active in their Alumni Association. 

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Peninsula Library Foundation, P.O. 
Box 333, Peninsula, Ohio 44264, or to Peninsula United Methodist Church, 1575 Main 
St., Peninsula, Ohio 44264, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, 
May 13, 2005. Friends will be received for memorial visitation at JOHNSON-ROMITO,

VOICE OF WOODRIDGE FOOTBALL, RUPERT MINNS JR., DEAD AT 82 PENINSULA 
MAN HAD ANNOUNCED SCHOOL'S GAMES FOR 45 YEARS
Most in Peninsula recognized Rupert G. Minns Jr. as the voice of the Woodridge High 
School football team. 

He announced the Bulldogs' games from 1955 to 2000, the first and only sports 
announcer at the school. 

But he will also be remembered for being active in his community and for his long 
participation in the school's foreign exchange program. 

Mr. Minns died May 9. He was 82. Funeral services were Friday. 

He was born in Millersburg and lived in Akron, where he graduated from West High 
School. He served in the Army. 

He married Edith Paige and the couple moved to Peninsula in 1954. They were 
married 60 years and had six children. 

His son, Roger Minns of Cuyahoga Falls, described his father as very family-oriented. 

"He didn't miss any school or athletic events we participated in and always provided 
rides for children when their parents weren't able to get them places." 

Mr. Minns worked for financial institutions in accounting and banking. 

Roger Minns said he wasn't sure if his father started his announcing career on a dare 
or because he felt a calling. 

It all started when a microphone and speakers were left behind after a carnival 
weekend. 

"He picked up the microphone and started announcing." 

Back then he had a long cord on the microphone and had to walk up and down the 
sidelines to announce the game. He wore a hat and overcoat to ward off rain and 
snow. 

"He knew the game and had a dry sense of humor with it," said John Lahoski of Terry 
Lumber & Supply Co. in Peninsula, who has memories of his football days in the late 
1950s and when he was a coach. "He was soft-spoken with no airs about him. People 
enjoyed him. He was a real treat to listen to." 

Mr. Minns stopped announcing two years ago, when the stairs to the press box got to 
be too much to climb. 

"He refused any help up the stairs. He was pretty independent," said John Kane, a 
former athletic director at Woodridge. 

"He never missed a game. He was the only person I knew would be there and the only 
one I didn't have to pay to get there. I tried to pay him, but he would never take any 
money." 

Mr. Minns was the former finance chairman at Peninsula United Methodist Church and 
active with the booster club and foreign exchange program at Woodridge. 

School officials say the couple hosted 21 exchange students in their home. 

Since 1990, they had taken five trips to Europe to visit families of children they had 
hosted.
