Edwin Senter "Curly" Mitchell, 81, a retired vice president ofCharles H. Tompkins Co., 
a Washington general contracting concern, who lived in Carolina Shores, N.C., died 
Nov. 16 at a nursing home in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He had Alzheimer's disease. 

He worked for Tompkins Co. for 43 years before retiring in 1981. During his years 
there, he served as corporate purchasing agent for construction projects involving the 
National Gallery of Art, National Geographic, the International Monetary Fund, the 
U.S. Capitol, the National Security Agency and the CIA. 

Mr. Mitchell, who was born in Norfolk and grew up in Chevy Chase, had lived in 
Kensington and Bethesda before moving to North Carolina in 1982. He was a 1936 
graduate of Central High School and attended George Washington University. 

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces in Europe as a waist gunner in 
B-24 Liberator bombers. He flew 25 combat missions. 

Mr. Mitchell was a past vice president of the Washington Association of Purchasing 
Agents and the Bethesda Fire Board. He also served on the board of Wesley 
Methodist Church in Chevy Chase. 

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Elizabeth Haag "Betty" Mitchell of 
Carolina Shores; a son, William Scott Mitchell of Washington; two grandsons; two 
step-grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. Edition: FINAL
