Deceased Name: Peter Jones

Peter Jones, who had a long career as a physician, medical school teacher and public 
health director, died Monday. He was 74. 
Dr. Jones died of complications from heart and lung ailments, a family member said. 
Active in civic affairs, Dr. Jones was director of the San Benito County Health 
Department from 1976 to 1992. He was on the Hollister High School District board of 
trustees from 1959 to 1965. 
Born in 1920 in Terre Haute, Ind., Dr. Jones was a graduate of Stanford University 
and served as an instructor for dive bomber pilots in World War II. He was awarded 
two distinguished flying crosses and air medals for combat service in the Pacific as a 
member of the U.S. Marine Air Corps. 
He returned to Stanford for medical school after the war and graduated in 1951. He 
interned at San Francisco General Hospital and opened his practice in Hollister in 
1953. He taught at Stanford during his career and after retiring from private practice. 
Dr. Jones is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons Steve Jones of Bayfield, Colo., Bob 
Jones of Durango, Colo., and Rick Jones of Reno; and three grandchildren.
