Afton King
  Afton Leon King, born June 11, 1918, in Morrilton, died Aug. 9, 2006, of a stroke.
  After high school graduation (1937), he used a rail ticket sent by his aunt and uncle 
to come to Seattle where he settled on a career with Northern Life Insurance Co. that 
lasted over 60 years. He loved his work and won salesmanship awards by being 
genuinely interested in his clients. He formed a group casualty business in 1956 with 
Herbert H. Nelson, covering 1,800 Seattle doctors.
  In 1962 he started his own independent agency, Afton L. King Insurance, while 
continuing as one of Northern Life’s top 12 producers. He holds the “Application-A-
Week Club” record for 32 consecutive years of sales. He spoke at conventions and 
wrote articles for insurance magazines. In 1978, he was named Northern Life’s “Man 
of the Year,” attaining a final career goal.
  He formed Combined Insurance Services with son-in-law Randy Blair in 1981 to free 
time for travel and “semi-retirement.” (He went to the office daily to the end.)
  Afton loved to travel with family and made many car trips throughout the United 
States. He expanded to world travel in 1970, and cruised around the world in 2005. 
Hawaii was an annual event since 1964, his version of heaven. He was a wood 
carver, ballroom dancer, genealogist and excellent magician, pulling off his thumb for 
children worldwide.
  He played harmonica and trumpet and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed hunting, 
fishing, golfing and bowling and continued working out at the gym until the week 
before his death. He lived life with gusto.
  A devoted family man, he was a member of Central Presbyterian Church (now 
Wallingford) since 1938, where he served as youth leader, elder, deacon and trustee. 
He held memberships in the Seattle Chamber, Masons, Shriners, Elks, Scottish Rite, 
and Washington Athletic Club. He was a founding member of Tillicum Village.
  Generous with time and money, he supported various young people in their college 
endeavors, theology students, missions, his hometown high school, and Morrilton’s 
Rialto Theater.
  He was preceded in death by wife Anita R. King (43 years); their infant son, Bruce 
B.; granddaughter, Mollola King Blair; and siblings Sherlon, Ila and Ophelia.
  He is survived in Seattle by daughters Linda (Michael) Brooks and Janice (Randy) 
Blair; grandson, Lassik King Blair; great-grandson, Stone Hunter Blair; wife, Ruth 
(Lundy) King (16 years); her children, Bill (Barbara) Lundy and Tom Lundy of New 
Zealand, and Beth (Larry) Hamilton of Virginia; and step-grandchildren Craig, Jeff, 
Daniel, Hamilton and Charles Lundy.

Seattle.
