From what I can tell of Titantic accounts, he is of the same family as the Thayers who 
were on board... probably a second cousin
[The connection: Sydney Thayer who married Edith Marian Bettle was the son of 
Sydney Thayer and Margaretta Jeanes. The older Sydney Thayer was the son of 
Sydney Thayer and Elise E. Bower. That Sydney Thayer was the son of John Borland 
Thayer and Mary Randolph Chapman. John Borland Thayer and Mary Randolph 
Chapman also were the parents of John Borland Chapman, Jr. He is the one who died 
in the sinking of the Titanic. His son John Borland Thayer (Jack) is the one who 
survived (along with his mother).

So: John Borland Thayer brother to Sydney Thayer who married Elise E Bower. Jack 
Thayer first cousin to the Sydney Thayer who married Margaretta Jeanes. So the 
Sydney Thayer who married Edith Marian Bettle (our fifth cousin) is the first cousin 
once removed of Jack Thayer who survived the sinking.
