JARPE -- Jay Stephen Jarpe, 75, died Saturday, April 24, 2010 while walking near his
home in Los Lunas. Jay is survived by his best friend and wife of 52 years, Marion
Blair Jarpe. His mother, Laura Camp Jarpe, is living in St. Paul, Minnesota. Jay and
Marion have six adult children: Stephen (married to Gayle), Jennifer Jarpe (married to
Daniel Armijo), Michael (married to Alyssa), Geoffrey (married to Tammy), Matthew
(married to Michelle Morris) and Andrew (married to Jenny); his 11 grandchildren: (Joel,
Alexa, Kyle, Samantha, Dana, Noah, Nicole, Laura, Samuel, Jessica and Zachary) all
knew him well and loved to get visits from "Grandpa", since Jay and Marion traveled
the country visiting family often. Jay also has three brothers and one sister, Jack
(married to Carole), Geoffrey (married to Lezlie), Diane Starke (married to Robert) and
John (married to Mary Kay). Jay also has many nieces and nephews. Jay was
preceded in death by his father, Gunnar Emmanuel Jarpe. Jay was born in Needles,
California. He spent his early years growing up the in mining towns of Oatman and
Humboldt, Arizona before moving to Milwaukee, Spokane and then Duluth, Minnesota.
He attended the University of Minnesota where he received a bachelors of science in
Mechanical Engineering. This started him on a very successful career at Clark
Equipment Company in Michigan, Caterpillar in Illinois, and Ford Tractor in Michigan.
In 1974, he moved his family to Los Lunas, New Mexico, where he had lived almost
entirely since. There he spent fourteen years on a small farm, raising his family and
just about every type of farm animal imaginable. In New Mexico, Jay's career led him
to make many contributions to solar energy research and efficient homes (he wrote the
book "How to Build a Russian Fireplace"). Jay retired from the University of New
Mexico where he performed research to better our nation's defenses. In retirement is
when Jay made his best philanthropist contributions. He and Marion spent time in
Bluff, Utah helping the Navajo Nation prepare their crops for proper watering, amongst
many other tasks. His idea of a mission for the church wasn't just about spreading the
word of God; performing physical labor and solving problems for the betterment of a
society was where he saw his greatest contribution. Seeing the world with his best
friend Marion was one of Jay's favorite activities. They stepped foot in all 50 states,
and traveled as far as Africa, Australia, Peru and Ireland. He embraced each culture
and got to know the locals as only Jay could. He was never a shy man and could
strike up a conversation with absolutely anyone. One of Jay and Marion's favorite
local vacation spots, Navajo Lake in New Mexico, is where Jay's ashes will be
returned to the Earth which he loved. Services will be held Thursday, April 29, 2010 at
The Cathedral of St. John located at 318 Silver Avenue SW (at the corner of 4th
Street and Silver Avenue) in Albuquerque, New Mexico at 1:00 p.m. Jay's family would
like to thank the Valencia County Sheriff's office, the local EMTs, and the Las
Maravillas community members for their assistance and support. In lieu of purchasing
flowers, please consider donating to one of Jay's favorite charities, the Paralyzed
Veterans of America (www.pva.org). As a patriot of the USA, Jay was always generous
and supportive toward making this nation the best place on Earth. Sign Jays online
