Nov 1-2... lest we forget
Fiano Francesco, soldier of two wars.
He was born in Santa Lucia di Serino on January 5, 1895, to Salvatore and Maria
Giuseppa Romeo.
First-class soldier, discharged from leverage on November 28, 1914. A few months
later, he is called to arms and assigned to the 12th Bersaglieri Regiment. Coming to
Carso, a territory declared in a state of war, on June 13, 1915 he lost track and then
officially accused of desertion, as he leaves his department to pass, we read and
transcribe, '' ignominiously to the enemy ".
This thing that wants Fiano to pass to the enemy has never convinced me.
Unfortunately, the facts say this: Judged by the military court of war by the 12th
Corps, on January 19, 1918 he is sentenced to death penalty with the means of
shooting in his back, after degradation and expenses Proceedings against family
members. The conviction of firing squad was not carried out because it was
contaminated. This also explains why his name doesn't appear on the cippo of the
fallen sites in the square of Santa Lucia di Serino.
We were at war and so for obvious reasons, on the fate of this soldier, we preferred to
lay a veil of silence. They continued to be silent even after a 1919 law which
condoned and rehabilitated all the soldiers stained with a conviction, including the
death one.
In June 1926, the breakthrough. Saint Lucy's vicar Don Antonio Pelosi received a
brief written note communicating the marriage between Fiano and Maria Lutringor
(born in Willer a small town to the south-east of France) celebrated on the previous
May 29, 1926 at St. Mary's Parish of Mulhouse. Having recovered this marriage
certificate, consulted the ongoing correspondence between the parish priest and the
mayor of that township, we have reason to believe that the news of the marriage
happened was deliberately subtracted. Why is that?
Let's summarize. During World War I, soldier Francesco Fiano abandoned his
teammates and deserted to repair a tiny village to the southwest of France where he
marries the lordship Maria Lutringor. The mayor of the village (we contacted even by
phone), denied us any form of collaboration. For what reason? Are there any children
who want to keep this under control? Mystery! The only certain fact is that Fiano,
being an Italian citizen, was taken prisoner on the Hesse front on September 8, 1943
(what was Fiano doing on the Hesse front? Another mystery! ) and interned in a camp
near Seligenstad, Germany, where he died on June 11, 1945.
Today his bones rest in the Italian military cemetery of honor in Frankfurt am Main.
Grave Location: Box F, row 4, grave 2.
