Joseph Robert Petite, aged 88, died July 22, 2021 in New Providence after a short
illness. Joe is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan Petite, also of New Providence;
their four children: Adrienne Auerbach (Reed) of Bernardsville, NJ, Joseph R. Petite,
Jr. (Toni) of Colorado, Maggie Petite of London, England, and John E. Petite (Carolyn)
of St. Louis, MO; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bob Sica; nine
grandchildren and ten nieces and nephews.
Joe was born and raised in Newark, NJ. He was the first in his family to go to college,
graduating with a BA in Economics from Rutgers University. After marrying Joan in
1960, he resided in Montclair and West Caldwell before spending 45 years in Basking
Ridge. He and Joan moved to Lantern Hill in New Providence in 2017.
Joe spent most of his career at Warner Lambert Company (now Pfizer) in various
financial management roles. He dedicated himself to many good causes, including
Mental Health Association in New Jersey for more than 30 years, the St. Elizabeth
School in Bernardsville, and the Somerset Hills YMCA. He served on the Bernards
Township Board of Education from 1986 to 1993, where as Steering Committee Chair
and Finance Committee Chair he led a bond issue that enabled the school district to
make substantial capital improvements. Joe headed up the Continuing Care Resident’s
Council at Lantern Hill from 2017 until March of 2021.
Joe was proud to have several friendships lasting more than 50 years and was
overjoyed to reconnect recently with another friend whose whereabouts he hadn’t
known since 1947. Joe will be remembered for his devotion to his volunteer
commitments; for passing on to his children his love of the New York Times crossword
puzzle, his financial acumen, and his delight in a good meal; and for being incredibly
supportive, patient and kind.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, September 25th at 11:00 a.m. at
St. Brigid’s R.C. Church in Peapack. To honor Joe’s memory, please consider a
