Frank J. Rodia, 86, former professional golf instructor in San Diego and a sponsor of 
the annual San Diego High School Golf Tournament, died of cancer June 15 in his 
Santa Rosa home. He and his wife, Thelma, had lived there for the past 18 months. 

He was the golf pro at Torrey Pines Golf Course from the time it opened in 1953 until 
he retired in 1970. 

Prior to Torrey Pines, he was golf pro at Mission Valley Country Club from 1934 until 
he went to Flying Hills Country Club in La Mesa. He was born in Seattle, Wash., in 
1903 and in 1922 graduated from Ballard High School. While a student at Ballard, he 
and a group of classmates challenged nearby Franklin High School to a golf match. 
From that time, his wife said, he was active in promoting junior golf programs. He was 
a sponsor for the annual San Diego High School tournament, and Mrs. Rodia said that 
the family plans to continue the sponsorship. 

Mr. Rodia was golf pro at several prestigious country clubs in Washington and Oregon 
before coming to San Diego in 1934. He also played in many tournaments. He won the 
Washington State Open twice, the Washington Professional Golf Association 
tournament twice, the Pacific Northwest PGA twice and the California PGA Seniors 
championship. He had played in five national PGA championship tournaments and 
three national opens. 

Mr. Rodia was inducted into the Northwest PGA Hall of Fame in Portland, Ore., in 
1982. 

After retiring in 1970, Mr. and Mrs. Rodia built a home on the Hood Canal near 
Alderborrk Country Club, in Washington, where he played golf and was active in senior 
affairs until they moved to Santa Rosa. In addition to his wife, survivors include two 
children, James Rodia of San Diego and Donna Mani of Novato; a sister, Peggy Farrell 
of Seattle, Wash., and three grandsons.
