SPORTS COACH, OFFICIAL, 59 Anthony J. Rodio, 59, active in South Jersey youth
sports programs as a coach and official, died Tuesday at the Hospital of the University
of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
A Cherry Hill resident for the last 39 years, he was born in Hammonton.
Mr. Rodio worked in the auto sales industry for many years.
A 1956 graduate of Camden High School, he was an All South Jersey football player
for Camden in 1955 as an inside lineman. Mr. Rodio remained active in athletics as an
official and coach in South Jersey youth sports.
He was an umpire and past president of the South Jersey Umpires Association. He
was a past president of the Cherry Valley Swim Club, and was an official for the Tri-
County Swim League. He was a coach for the Cherry Hill Midget Football League for
more than a decade in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a member of the Bishop Eustace
Prep Fathers Club.
Mr. Rodio also served as a parade marshal for Cherry Hill's annual Cherry Blossom
Parade for many years in the 1970s and 1980s.
''He did it for 20 years straight - he was one of the co-founders of the parade,'' said
Joseph Zanghi, parade organizer. The parade was started to help bring a sense of
community to Cherry Hill.
He helped plant many of the more than 1,200 cherry trees planted in conjunction with
the parade and festival, Zanghi said.
He was a member of St. Peter Celestine Parish for more than 30 years.
He had attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Patricia Messina Rodio; a son, Bruce; two
daughters, Sandy Klevan and Donna Paternoster; two grandchildren; and a brother,
Dennis.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. Peter Celestine Roman Catholic Church,
402 N. Kings Highway, Cherry Hill, where a Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Burial
will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 410 White Horse Pike,
Haddon Heights, N.J. 08035.
