PHYSICIAN FIORE 'FRED' TROMBETTA

Services have been held for Dr. Fiore F. "Fred" Trombetta, a South Philadelphia 
physician for more than a half-century. Trombetta, who died Friday, was 78 and lived 
in South Philadelphia.

Born in South Philadelphia, Trombetta attended Roman Catholic High School and 
Villanova University and graduated from Temple University medical school.

He practiced family medicine in the 13th and Porter streets neighborhood and had 
been on the staff of St. Agnes Medical Center for more than 40 years. For a while 
before going into practice he was an associate surgeon at the hospital. In 1980, the 
Philadelphia Medical Society honored him for "50 years of outstanding service to the 
health needs of the South Philadelphia community."

"He was the kind of guy who was always available to his patients," said Fred 
Trombetta, his son. "He'd make house calls at night and on weekends and never 
charged those who were unable to pay. People would ring the bell at home in the 
middle of the night or call and he would help them. He didn't hide behind an answering 
service."

"He was a dedicated physician. . . . He was made of gold," said his wife, the former 
Mildred Manfredi.

In 1940, Trombetta received a Certificate of Appreciation from President Franklin 
Roosevelt "in grateful recognition of uncompensated services" when he was a 
physician to the Selective Service Board 68 in Philadelphia. He received a second 
certificate from the head of the Selective Service.

Trombetta retired in 1982.

In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by a daughter, Arlene Nicolini.

Services were held Monday, with burial in New St. Mary's Cemetery, Browning Road, 
Bellmawr, N.J.
