This family was originally wrote Coigners, and was so called from a place of that name
in France. Roger de Coigners came into England towards the end of the reign of
William the Conqueror, to whom the bishop of Durham, (William de Kaerlepho,) abbot
of St. Vincent's, in Normandy, gave the constableship of Durham.
