John Beke, 1st and last Lord (Baron) Beke, so created 24 June 1295 by writ of 
summons to Parliament, of Eresby; born by 1230; dspms 1303-04, when any barony 
created by the write of summons must be deemed by later doctrine to have fallen into 
abeyance between his daughter. [Burke's Peerage]

John Beke, son and heir of Walter Beke of Eresby, co. Lincoln, by Eve, niece of 
Walter de Grey, Archbishop of York, b. bef. 1230, had 1275-76 lic. to crenellate his 
manor house of Eresby, and was summoned to Parliament, 24 June, 1 Oct, and 2 Nov 
1295 and 26 Aug 1296, by writs directed Johanni Bek, whereby he may be held to 
have become Lord Beke. By his will dated 18 July 1301, he directs his burial to be in 
the Abbey of Kirkstede. He dspms. 1303-4, when any Barony created by the writ of 
1295 would be held, by modern doctrine, to have fallen into abeyance (e). [Complete

(e) His only son and heir apparent, Walter Beke, was living 1 Aug 1301, but dvp. and 
sp. soon after. The coheirs were his (ie. John's) daughters (1) Alice, who m. Sir 
William Willoughby, and was mother of Robert Willoughby, of Eresby, summoned to 
Parliament 26 July 1313. Her representative Robert (Bertie), Earl of Lindsey, temp. 
James II and Anne, as also his grandson, Peregrine, Duke of Ancaster, temp. George 
II, styled themselves respectively (inter alia) "Baron of Willoughby, Beke et Eresby" 
(2) Margaret, or Milisent, who m. Richard Harcourt of Stanton Harcourt, Oxon, her 
representative soon devolving on the family of Astley of Pateshull, co. Stafford, and 
(3) Mary, who d. unmarried.
