NOTE: Rosie Bevan posted that Muriel de Langetot m. William de Beaumont of
Drayton as his 2nd wife. However, it turns out that it was this William that she married
-- see below under Themilthorpe.
------------------
EAST-BARSHAM,
Maurice de Barsham, in the 31st of Henry II. was fined 40l. because he gave his
daughter in marriage to William de Bellomonte, and William was also fined 23l. 6s. 2d.
because he married against the agreement that he had made to marry the daughter of
Ralph de Gedding. This Maurice began his journey or pilgrimage to St. James of
Compostella in Spain, on the feast of St. Dunstan, and gave to the priory of
Castleacre, for the prosperity of his journey, all his corn in his granges of East
Barsham, and West Barsham, 64 sheep in his fold course of East, and 16 in that of
West Barsham, with all his tenements which he held of them, if he should not return
again; he also confirmed to them the gifts of his ancestors in lands, meadows, mills,
homages, and gave them the churches of East Barsham, and Taterset, with 2 men in
Taterset, his villains; and William de Bellomonte and Joan his wife (daughter, as I take
it, of Maurice) confirmed the same. ..
In the 2d of Richard I. on Sunday after the feast of St. John Port Latine, before
William Bishop of Ely, legate of the apostolick see ,the Lord Roger, the chancellor,
William Mareschall, Roger FitzReinfrid, Robert de Whitefeld, Symon de Pateshale,
Symon de Runbes, Michael Belet, Mr. Thomas de Husseborn, Hugh Pipard, and Henry
de Withington, the King's justices, Hugh, prior of Castleacre, grants to Hugh, by fine,
or William de Bellomonte and Joan his wife, the services of two freemen in East
Barsham, and they grant a tenement, and East mill here, to the prior, with 3s. rent in
Kerdeston, payable by Roger Burgolion.

NOTE: 31 Henry II is 1174, by which time William & Joan were married.

THEMILTHORPE,
In the 8th of King John, a fine was levied between Muriel, widow of William de
Bellomonte, and William de Bellomonte her son, of the dower of Muriel in this town;
and William de Bellomonte confirmed to the priory of Castleacre 2 parts of the tithe of
his demeans here, and in Kerdeston, held of the Earl Warren; and in the 14th of Henry
III. Robert de Thymelthorp had lands, and paid half for a writ called a pone. From:

NOTE: The above was written by Francis Blomefield.
The following post to SGM, 8 Mar 2011, by John Watson, has a significant difference
to the above text from Blomefield, indicating that William, the son of William, was not
necessarily the son of Muriel:
Blomefield writes, "In the 8th of King John, a fine was levied between Muriel, widow of
William de Bellomonte, and William de Bellomonte her son, of the dower of Muriel in
this town"
However, two different editions of calendars of Norfolk feet of fines state that the text
reads:
1206-07, 8 John, Muriel widow of William de Bello Monte v. William his son,
reasonable dower in Timeltorp "sic aqua descendit a novo ponte usque ad
Hakefordwad".
George H. Dashwood, Pedes Finium, or, Fines Respecting the County of Norfolk
(1863) p. 114, No. 341
Walter Rye, A Short Calendar of the Feet of Fines for Norfolk, Vol. 1 (1885) p. 25, No.
341
Blomefield states that William was Muriel's son, but the evidence does not support
this. It is more probable that William was the son of Joan de Barsham.

John
