Enc Amer Quaker Genealogy (ancestry.com)
according to Proceedings of New Jersey Historical Society, vol 9, on google, there is
a record not in Smith's History or Proud's: "For the satisfaction of a numerous posterity
descended from the persons I am going to mention, I here add a list of such who
passed the monthly meeting of Philadelphia for marriage, for the first 32 years after the
settlement of Pennsylvania by the English: ..... 1688 John Densey and Sarah
Hollyman.
Penna Magazine of History and Biography vol 44 on google books lists John Densey
as a house carpenter in what is considered "probably first attempt at a business
directory in Philadelphia" per article in 24 Apr 1922 Phila Inquirer, which also quotes
it, it is believed to be from 1682.
It is on google books, called "Colonial Philadelphians" by Hannah Benner Roach, p 39
(header "Philadelphia Business Directory 1690), "John Denzy, carpenter, was also
granted a lot in Strawberry Alley at the same time as James Pellar." Footnote 63 spells
it Denzey and mentions marriage to Sarah Hollyman. Earlier on page is Thomas Marle,
the carpenter.
Was witness to will of Henry Jones in Phila on 19 Aug 1688, and in Aug 1690 witness
to will of Richard Morriss.
Several ancestry trees give parents as Richard and Ann.
In Buckinghamshire, England, Parish records, marriage of Richard Denzey to Ann
Swift, both of "N.P." 5 Nov 1655
There is a John Densey b 1614 in Oxfordshire. Grandfather?
Following Richard Densey, I find records in Whaddon, Buckinghamshire of a family
named Densey with John and Richard being first names
Here is a tree on ancestry:
Thomas Denzey b 1648, ancestors of Denzeys in Banbury
is Thomas a brother of John?
His parents are Richard (b 1612 Cropredy, Oxfordshire, d 1684, Cropredy) and Anne
(but can't be the Richard and Ann Swift who md in 1655)
Richard, son of Thomas Denzey (b 1589) and Barbara Bick (md 1610).
Thomas, son of William Denze (b 6 Jan 1540 in Cropredy) and Ann Russel
William Denze, son of Richard Denzey (1500-1559) and Katherine Wryght
Richard Denzey (d 29 Jun 1559 Cropredy), son of William Denzey
per EAQG, they had children Ann, Sarah, John, and Thomas. Sarah's parents are
Thomas and Sarah, so my guess is that John's parents are John and Ann
From Publications of the Genealogical Socy of Pa, vol 2, page 143, minutes of Phila
MM of Friends, 30th of 9th mo 1688, then on p 144: "Margaret Beardsley & Hannah
Carpenter presented to this meeting the first time William Rodney & Mary Hollyman who
declared their intentions of marriage, and the said Wm. Rodney having formerly lived
among friends in Maryland, This meeting desires he will bring a Certificate of his
clearness from the monthly meetin there.
"The same friends presented John Densey & Sarah Hollyman the first time, who
declared their intentions of marriage, and a Letter from his father & Mother was read
wherein they do not object against his marriage, but rather laid before him the
weightiness of it, and other good advice. Andrew Griscom & John Goodson are desired
to Enquire into his clearness, and give account to the next meeting."
