From the beginning, Hermitage was seen as a vitally important base for controlling 
Liddesdale in the Scottish West March and a large stretch of the Border with England. 
Indeed, the castle's construction, probably by Sir Nicholas de Soules, butler to King 
William, in about 1240, almost brought the two countries to war. De Soules' fortress 
was probably a motte-and-bailey castle similar to his ancestors' former stronghold, 
Liddel Castle, four miles to the south beside Liddel Water at Old Castleton.

A wooden castle was first built on this spot in 1242 by Sir Nicholas de Soules, butler 
to the King of Scotland and a man whose reputation included witchcraft, child 
abduction and murder. De Soules allegedly came to a sticky end when oppressed 
locals rose up and boiled him in molten lead.

NOTE: There is also a story about Nicholas's ancestor (probably Ranulf/Randolph de 
Soules, d. 1208), who was supposedly murdered by his servants because he was so 
vile. Either they were the same incident (with confusion over which person was 
involved), or there was a real "mean" streak running in this family.
