Note: I believe that there were two Ralphs in a row: The elder Ralph, said to be son 
of Gerold, paid for a writ in 1170, and therefore he was of born by 1149 (I estimate 
c1140). Ralph, his son, was b c.1165 and probably held Empingham in 1205, and had 
the troubles with King John in the years 1214-1216. If there were only one Ralph (b. 
by 1149), he would have been at least 68 when he was supposed to enter the king's 
service in 1217, with his two sons. I believe that being b. c1165, with his sons being 
born in the 1190s would be more reasonable. VCH Rutland does not state that there 
were two Ralphs, but does not explicitly indicate that the Ralph active c1214 was the 
same Ralph who paid for a writ in 1170.
