Bassingbourne, Cambridgeshire:

Part of the Richmond manor was, probably by the 1170s, subinfeudated to Warin of 
Bassingbourn, steward of the honor c. 1175 and joint sheriff of Cambridgeshire 1170–
7. He died c. 1192. His son and heir Wimar (Wihomarc) held the Bassingbourn land in 
1214 and died c. 1218, leaving as his heir son Warin (d. 1229). The latter's son 
Warin, then a minor, came of age c. 1248. A follower of the Lord Edward, Warin was 
rewarded in 1266 for his royalism during the baronial rebellion with several offices and 
a licence to crenellate his manor house at Bassingbourn. He died in 1269, holding ¼ 
knight's fee there of the honor of Richmond. His son and heir Edmund, who held the 
manor in 1275, died after 1293, leaving a son Warin, who held it c. 1302 and was 
knighted by 1316. He was possibly murdered c. 1334, and was succeeded by 1344 by 
his son Warin, recorded as Sir Warin Bassingbourn 'of the castle', until 1359. In 1378 
the latter's son and heir John settled CASTLE manor, then held for life by his father's 
widow Margaret, upon his marriage, and in 1388 acquired c. 70 a. there. It was 
probably the same John who died, apparently without surviving issue, in 1420.

NOTE: Warin's probable birth date, his name (Warin) and his son's name (Wimar), and 
the fact that he was a Steward of Richmond, place Warin of Bassingbourne as a 
grandson of Wimar the 1st Steward of Richmond. Wimar was said to have only 2 sons: 
Warner/Warren/Warin the eldest and Roger the younger, both of whom were said to 
be Stewards of Richmond. Since the elder son Warner's line was known to have died 
out c1232 and the descendants of Roger were the heirs, that leaves only 2 
possibilities: Either Warin of Bassingbourn was a son of a 3rd unknown son of Warin 
the 1st Steward, younger than Warner & Roger (because Warner was the eldest & 
Roger's line inherited when the eldest line died out), or Roger had a son, Warin of 
Bassingbourne, who was younger than Ralph. I believe that the latter possibility is the 
more probable.
