BARONY OF SAINT AMAND (II) 1313
JOHN DE ST. AMAND, brother and heir, aged 27-30 according to Amauri's inquisition
post mortem, did fealty, and had orders for livery of his lands in England and Ireland,
October 1310 and March 1310/1, being styled Master John (i). In the matter of the
escape of prisoners from Oxford castle, 1305, he was pardoned, in consideration of
his brother's good service, and fined £40. He was summoned to Parliament, 8 January
1312/3 to 10 October 1325, by writs directed Johanni de Sancto Amando, whereby he
is held to have become LORD ST. AMAND. He was summoned against the Scots,
1315 and later, to 1323. In February 1318/9 he was going overseas on service with
Hugh le Despenser the elder. In 1321 he was warned not to attend the assembly of
"Good Peers" convened by the EARL OF LANCASTER, and in 1322 he was
summoned to assist the King against the Lancastrians. In 1329, a commissioner of the
Peace, Beds, and a Knight.
He married, in or after December 1313, Margaret, daughter of Hugh LE DESPENSER,
afterwards EARL OF WINCHESTER, by Isabel, widow of Sir PATRICK DE CHAURCES,
and daughter of William (DE BEAUCHAMP), EARL OF WARWICK, by Maud, sister and
coheir of Sir Richard FITZJOHN [LORD FITZJOHN], and 1st daughter of Sir John
FITZGEOFFREY. He died shortly before 15 January 1329/30 (f). [Complete Peerage
XI:298-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(i) As Master John he was trustee for his sister Eleanor in Feb 1300/1. The title was
given to an M.A. or Bachelor of Laws.
(f) In 1329 he had licence to found a chantry at Wanborough, Wilts. The Ralph de St.
Amand who in 1361 held 1/2 fee in Great Wishford, Wilts, of the Duke of Lancaster,
may have been his younger son.
NOTE: Technically CP states that this is a new peerage title, not just inherited from
John's elder brother. However, CP numbers "II" as if it were (and it probably was in a
non-legal sense).
