Geoffrey Fitz Robert, later de Neville; took his mother's family name because of the
vast estates she had brought with her; notably Brancepeth, Sheriff-Hutton now in
North Yorkshire, together with land in Lincolnshire; married Joan, possibly coheir of
John de Monmouth. [Burke's Peerage]
------------------------------
GEOFFREY, son and heir apparent of Robert and Isabel, assumed the name of
NEVILLE, and was evidently put in possession of the whole, or part, of the Neville
fees in Lincs. As Geoffrey FitzRobert he gave land at Burreth to Tupholme Abbey, and
as Geoffrey FitzRobert FitzMaldred he witnessed his father's charter regarding 2
prebends of York. He married Joan (----) (b), and died before Michaelmas 1242. His
widow was living in November 1247. [Complete Peerage IX:495, transcribed by Dave
Utzinger]
(b) Possibly a coheir of John de Monmouth.
------------------------------
Geoffrey de Neville, of Raby Castle, Sheriff of Northumberland 1258, Justice of the
King's Forests; m. Joan, living 1247, erroneously called dau. John of Monmouth, d.
1257, lord of Monmouth, co. Monmouth. (CP IX:485, Sanders, pp. 3, 65, 96-97, shows
the heirs of John of Monmouth to be his aunts Albreda and Joan Walerand). [Ancestral
Roots, line 247-26.]
NOTE: I find nothing about this in CP IX:485, and have not ready access to Sanders
(just a tiny window in google books, which showed most of the Monmouth line). It did
show that John had a son John, and it must have been he who d. 1257 and had
Waleran heirs. Joan's father d. 1248. It might be that Joan was the dau. by another
wife other than Cecily Waleran.
------------------------------
Adopted maternal surname
He became the 1st Baron Neville of Raby and inherited his mother's estates of
Brancepeth and Sheriff-Hutton Castle. Founded the Neville line of Raby from which
Richard, Lord Warwick the Kingmaker came from.
Some say married to a "Margaret" who was the mother of his children.
