NOTE: I give Beatrice the title "Countess of Essex" because she was recognized as
the heir to the Earldom of her nephew William de Mandeville, 3rd Earl of Essex, and,
according to CP V:12205, her grandson-in-law, Geoffrey FitzPiers, was not invested
with the title Earl of Essex until after Beatrice died in 1197 in recognition of the fact
that Beatrice (as a widow) held the title.

----------------------------------

Beatrice (died 19 April 1197 or some year before it), daughter of William de
Mandeville, sister of 1st Earl of Essex and divorced wife of Hugh Talebot. [Burke's
Peerage]

----------------------------------

He [William de Say] m. Beatrice, divorced wife of Hugh Talebot, sister of Earl Geoffrey
above named, and da. of William de Mandeville. The Earl is said to have brought her
to England for the marriage. She lived to a great age; d. 19 Apr, in or before 1197,
and was buried at Walden Abbey. (Complete Peerage XI:464-5 (transcribed by Thomas
Aiken))

Below is my response to a query by Mike Lysell, via a post-em, concerning Beatrice's
marriage date to Hugh Talbot and the birth dates of their children:

I may have been too conservative ("bef 1135") with Richard's birth year. I sometimes
get frustrated with sources that refuse to give a guestimate as to the birth year, when
they probably have a fairly good idea. Anyway "bef 1135" is the only date I could nail
down as a definite sourced date, but he was probably born much earlier.

I see on soc.genealogy.medieval that Beatrice m. her 2nd husband "bef 1197" (in
other words before she died). However that is even more outlandish a date than mine,
because they do indicate she had children (Richard/William) by that marriage, and
that had to be well before she was 92 years old (1197)!

I see many people have Hugh Talbot d. 1120. At least one has "aft 1123", which is
what I will use, along with abt 1120 as the marriage and 1121 and 1123 as the
respective birth years. If Beatrice was divorced (as my sources state), then Hugh
probably was still alive for awhile after their divorce. I then give Hugh's 1st wife a
death of "bef. 1120" which might be the source of confusion over Hugh's death date.

Most of the marriage/birth dates are not sourced, but they seem reasonable.
