BARONY of CHAURCES or CHAWORTH (I) 1299
THOMAS DE CHAURCES, son and heir of Thomas de C (a). On 8 June 1294 he, with
about 60 others, had summons to attend the King wheresoever he might be, and,
again, on 26 January 1296/7 was summoned to attend the King at Salisbury, which
writs, however, did not constitute a summons to Parliament. He was summoned to
Parliament 6 February 1298/9, by writ directed Thome de Chaworth, whereby he is
held to have become LORD CHAURCES, but was not summoned to the Parliament at
Lincoln, 26 September 1300, though his name as " Thomas de Chaurces, Dominus de
Norton" is affixed to the celebrated letter of the Barons to the Pope in 1301.
He married Joan before 1 November 1301, when she was living. He died 1315, before
20 October, when his laiids were ordered to be taken into the King's hands. [Complete

(a) This Thomas was son and heir of William de Charces (living 1232), by Alice, 1st
daughter of Robert Alfreton, of Norton, co. Derby, and coheir of her brother Thomas
Alfreton of the same, was a minor and ward 1241-42, but came of age 1246-7.
After his death none of his posterity were sum. to Parl. until the creation by patent in
1628. His successors were
(1) his son and heir William Chaworth (henceforward the family name), who was
succeeded by his son and heir,
(2) Sir Thomas C. (f), who married Alice, and was succeeded by his son and heir
(3) Sir Thomas C., who married Jane, daughter of Geoffrey LUTTRELL, and who died
1370-71. Their son and heir apparent
(4) Sir Thomas C., married, 1stly, Joan, widow of Sir Richard DE LA POLE, the King's
butler (both being alive 28 May 1348), and 2ndly, Margaret (who as his widow,
married, before Midsummer, 1373, when both were living, William DE SPAIGNE, of St.
Botolph's, and died v.p.
(5) Sir William C., son and heir, by 2nd wife, having proved his age, had livery of his
grandfather's lands, 13 June 1373; he married Alice, daughter and heir of Sir John
CALTOFTE.
(6) Sir Thomas C., their son and heir, married, 2ndly, before 24 August 1449, Isabel
(living as his wife 2 November 1452), daughter, and in her issue heir of Sir Thomas
Aylesbury, of Wiverton, Notts, and died 17 February 1458/9.
(7) Sir William C., their son and heir, married Elizabeth, daughter and coheir of
Nicholas BOWETT, of Repinghall, by whom he had
(8) Thomas C., who married Margaret, daughter of John (TALBOT), 2nd EARL OF
SHREWSBURY, and died a lunatic and s.p. 1482-83, leaving Joan, wife of John
ORMOND, his sister and heir. She died s..p.m., leaving three daughters, among whose
descendants any Barony which may be supposed to have been created by the writ of

(f) His will (Latin), dated Affirton (Alfreton), 7 Nov 1347, directs his burial to be with
his grandfather, Lord Thomas, in the Abbey of Beauchief, co. Derby, and makes his
son and heir Thomas executor, but mentions no wife.
(d) These were
(1) Joan, m., 1stly, Thomas Dinham (illegit. son of John, the last Lord Dinham), by
whom she had several children. She m., 2ndly, ____ FitzWilliam.
(2) Elizabeth, m. Sir Anthony Babington, by whom she was great-grandmother of
Anthony Babington, attainted temp. Queen Elizabeth.
(3) Anne, m. William Mering, of Notts, but dsp.
