Sergeant Major of the Army Alfonso De Simone, (2.11.1921 - 2.11.1970), awarded

Alfonso De Simone was born in Serino on November 2, 1921. Son of Antonio and
Chiara Mariconda
On March 30, 1940 he follows for the military district of Naples to be assigned to the
secretariat services.
On May 22nd of the same year he is added to the 79th Infantry Regiment “Rome”.
On June 10, 1940 this regiment counts organically: a commando with commando
company, three rifle battalions, a mortai company of 81, a battery of escort weapons

1941/42 - After participating in the defensive deployment on the Yugoslav border,
(1941-1942), since July 1943, the Regiment is engaged on the Russian front, where it
will suffer heavy losses in the battles of Donetz, on the front of the Don, Gorlowka,

In April 1943 repatriation began for the survivors. The famous “Long March” where
many of our soldiers lost their lives. For the remaining lucky few, once in Italy,
reorganization awaits them. On September 8, 1943 we find Sergeant Major Alfonso De
Simone, after being framed in the 20th Regiment of Combat Gunners, he is placed
under the command of the 5th US Army, stationed at those days in Sicily. From
Catania, for the petty officer from Serina, his War of Liberation will begin. Topic we
