Obituaries: John Butler, former employee of American Cyanamid in Bound Brook, 
passes away at age 84

John H. Butler, 84, of Myrtle Beach, SC died suddenly on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Grand 
Strand Regional Medical Center. Born May 9, 1928 in Stamford, Conn., he was the son 
of the late John James and Gladys Mae Butler.

Mr. Butler graduated from St. Basil’s Preparatory School in Stamford, Conn., earned a 
Bachelor of Science. in Chemistry at his beloved Colby College in Waterville, ME and 
completed all coursework for a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Brooklyn Polytechnic in NY. 
He retired from American Cyanamid in Bound Brook, after more than 30 years of 
service, initially in chemistry labs and later as a technical patent liaison. 

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 27 years, Dolores Hess Butler. Formerly of 
Lebanon, the couple relocated to Myrtle Beach in 2002.

He is also survived by his son Richard and wife Debi Butler of Milford; daughter 
Claudia Butler and fiancé Gregg Shannon of Los Angeles, Calif.; step-daughter 
Kelliann Hess and husband Charles Dearolf of Newton, Mass.; step-son John and wife 
Brandi Hess of Marcus Hook, PA; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He 
was preceded in death by his first wife Helen Spartas Butler (1984) and son Robert 
Butler (2005).

He was passionate about education, books, the New York Times crossword puzzle, 
the New York Giants, golf, and his church fellowship.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 28, at 4 p.m. at The Church of the 
Resurrection 8901 Hwy 17 Bypass Surfside Beach, SC 29587. Reception to follow.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m. at The Mountain 
View Cemetery Assoc. of Cokesbury in Lebanon. Reception to follow. 

The Burroughs Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Murrells Inlet, SC, is in 
charge of arrangements.
