See notes under Giuseppe, where in his death cert she is listed as Maria Giuseppa. 
Yet marr cert of their dtr and her birth cert shows her as Luisa. Clearly she is the same 
person. Why the name change? I she Maria Giuseppa Prata? No, as this Maria 
Giusappa is the dtr of Marco Denza and Anna Brancaccio (see above). Did Luisa die 
and Giuseppe married her sister?
and on her death cert husband is shown as Giuseppe Dizone.
Note, on Clementina birth cert, Luisa shown as 32 (b 1811), but age of Maria 
Giuseppa is 69, which  means born 1808.
In 1872, in marr cert of Nicola Zona, brother of Clementina, both Giuseppe Zona and 
Luisa Denza are shown as alive. And Luisa's occupation is the same as Maria 
Giuseppa's occupation (seamstress). And she is living in the same street (v. Marzano) 
as given in other records.

My earlier write-up on the mystery of why she was called Luisa in some of the records:

Here is a mystery to solve.

1. The mother of my mother’s father (my great grandmother) is Clementina Zona (who 
married Nicola Zappone).

2. The marriage certificate of Nicola Zappone and Clementina Zona (24 Oct 1868) 
describes Clementina Zona as 25 years of age, born in Centurano (a frazione of 
Caserta). It identifies her parents as “Giuseppe e Luisa Denza.” Clementina is 
described as living on viella Marzano.

3. The birth certificate of Clementina Zona (issued 10 Jan 1843, with her birth 9 Jan 
1843) describes her father as “Giuseppe Zona,” age 35, domiciled in Centurano, on 
Strada Marzano. So he would have been born between 11 Jan 1807 and 10 Jan 1808. 
It describes Clementina’s mother as “Luisa Denza,” age 32. So she would have been 
born between 11 Jan 1810 and 10 Jan 1811.

4. The registers of San Clemente (which begin in 1820 and include Centurano) include 
birth, death, and marriage certificates for the following children of Giuseppe Zona and 
Luisa Denza:

4a Alessandro Zona, age 27, son of Giuseppe Zona and Luisa Denza, married, 29 Mar 
1862, Angela Maria Perriello. So Alessandro would have been born between 30 Mar 
1834 and 29 Mar 1835.

4b Antonia Dizone, age 14, dtr of Giuseppe Zona and Luisa Denza, died 17 Aug 1850. 
So Antonia would have been born between 18 Aug 1835 and 17 Aug 1836. NOTE that 
the name Dizone (or diZone) is used not only here but for some other members of the 
same family who probably are cousins, and is used interchangeably for the same 
person.

4c  Domenico Carlo Zona, age 31, born in Centurano, son of Giuseppe Zona and 
Luisa Denza,  married, 12 Dec 1869, Maddalena Filomena Abbate. So Domenico 
would have been born between 13 Dec 1837 and 12 Dec 1838.


4e  Nicola Zona, age 27, born in Centurano, son of Giuseppe Zona and Luisa Denza, 
married, 26 Dec 1872, Rosa Masella. So Nicola would have been born between 27 
Dec 1844, and 26 Dec 1845

4f  Rosalina Zona, age 23, born in Centurano, dtr of Giuseppe Zona and Luisa Denza, 
married, 28 Sept 1871, Nicola Masella. So Rosalina would have been born between 
29 Sept 1847 and 28 Sept 1848.

5. In searching for the death records of Giuseppe Zona, the only record in the 
registers that matches a person of that name, age, and location gives the following 
information: On 6 Mar 1894, there died Giuseppe Dizone, age 86, domiciled in 
Centurano at vicolo Marzano, born in Centurano, son of the late Crescenzo who lived 
in Centurano and the late Alessandra Brignola, who lived in Centurano, the widower of 
Maria Giuseppa Denza. Not Luisa? This Giuseppe would have been born between 7 
Mar 1807 and 7 Mar 1808, which fits the age of the Giuseppe Zona in the Clementina 

6. In searching for the death records of Luisa Denza, I found nothing in the registers 
that would match a person of that name, age, and location. But considering the name 
of Giuseppe Dizone’s pre-deceased spouse, and in looking for all Denza, Zona, and 
Dizone records, I found a record that gives this information: On 13 Oct 1877, there 
died Maria Giuseppa Denza, age 69, domiciled in Centurano at vicolo Marzano, born 
in San Clemente, dtr of the late Marco who lived in San Clemente, and of the late 
Anna Brancaccio, who lived in San Diego, Maria Giuseppa being the wife of Giuseppe 
Dizone. This Maria Giuseppa would have been born between 14 Oct 1807 and 15 Oct 
1808. This is roughly two and a quarter years earlier than the dates given for Luisa 

7. In searching for a marriage certificate for Giuseppe Zona and Luisa Denza, the only 
record in the registers that matches a Giuseppe Zona or Dizone of the age and 
location in question gives the following information: On 5 June 1833, in Centurano, 
there was a marriage between Giuseppe Dizone and Maria Giuseppa Denza. Giuseppe 
was born and lived in Centurano, is age 26, is the son of Crescenzo Dizone and 
Alessandro Brignola. So this Giuseppe would have been born between 6 June 1806 
and 5 June 1807, which fits the age of the Giuseppe Zona in the Clementina Zona 
age 26, is the dtr of Marco Denza and Anna Brancaccio. So this Maria Giuseppa 
would have been born between 5 June 1806 and 5 June 1807, which is three and a 
half years earlier than the dates given for Luisa Denza in the birth certificate of 
Giuseppa Denza included in the processetti for this marriage, in Latin, gives her name 
as Maria Josepha Clementina, with her father being  Marco d’Enza and her mother 
Anna Brancaccio.

8. I’ve not yet received the film that I think might have the birth records for Giuseppe 
Zona/Dizone and Maria Giuseppa Denza or Luisa Denza. I am guessing that the 
registers for San Clemente covering events before 1820 are in the main registers for 
Caserta.

9. In scouring the registers for San Clemente, for Caserta from 1866 through 1920, 
and, for other reasons, Tuoro, I have found no births recorded for children with a 
father named Giuseppe Zona/Dizone and a mother named Maria Giuseppa Denza.

At this point, it seems certain that the Giuseppe Zona/Dizone in all of the preceding 
records is the same person. It seems certain that he was married to someone officially 
known as Maria Giuseppa and to no one else during the period of time that the 
children were born. The only records referring to a Luisa Denza of the appropriate age 
and location are those of the children, whose births occur during the 15 year period 
beginning in 1833 when the marriage of Giuseppe and Maria Giuseppa occurs. And so 
to my question. Is it possible that for some reason Maria Giuseppa was called, or used 
the name, Luisa when the births of her children were recorded?
