Gray, Evan Wallace, passed away peacefully in his sleep December 11, 2009. Born
January 1, 1919 in Santa Clara, Utah, Evan moved to southern California in 1941
where he lived until his passing. He was a professional engineer and employed by the
Department of the Navy and worked at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard from 1943 to
1958 and then at the U.S. Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach from 1958 until his
retirement in 1978. Additionally, before his retirement, Evan was a part-time teacher at
Long Beach City College for over 10 years. After retirement, in 1980, he and his wife
moved to San Juan Capistrano and enjoyed many active years in the community.
Throughout his career and retirement, Evan continued to work as an investor and
manager of real estate. Evan was a man who refused to be beaten down by the trials
of life. Having lost both parents at the age of 10, he was resolved to make the most of
what little he had by being successful as a husband, father, engineer, investor, golfer
and to just about everything he put his hands to. Evan and his wife met while working
at the Naval Shipyard, married in 1945 and raised their family in Long Beach. He is
survived by his wife, Nina Carolyn (Hanson) Gray; four children, David, Robert, Mark
and Sheryl; the children's spouses, Darlene, Joy, Kathleen and Jim; nine grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren. He was an unwavering example to his family, and all
who came to know him, of honesty, hard work, commitment, service and love of family.
His triumph in life grew out of a faith in, and admiration for, God. Memorial services
will be held Friday, December 18, 11am at the Hillside Chapel (gate 17) Rose Hills
Cemetery in Whittier.
