Reed Alden Gray Reed was born in 1921 in Santa Clara, Utah, to Alden and Matilda 
Gray. After residing in Saratoga for 48 years, he passed away on July 26, 2009, at the 
age of 88. He was a loving and devoted husband to his late wife of 31 years, Hazel I. 
Gray. He was a wonderful father to daughters Arlene Miller and Linda Stiborek, and 
sons-in-law Richard Miller and John Stiborek. Reed adored his nine grandchildren: 
Joel, Aaron and Daniel Smith, Alanna Cluff, and Jeremy, Christopher, Jonathan, 
Benjamin and Joshua Stiborek, and his four great-grandchildren: Abigail, Joel 
Jonathan, and Luke Smith, and Jacob Cluff. He also enjoyed his stepchildren and 
step-grandchildren. Reed was generous, loving, intelligent, and hard-working. 
Attending church was a favorite activity because of his deep faith, as well as his 15 
years of temple work for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His love of 
photography and movie- making led him to many happy years in the Los Gatos-
Saratoga Camera Club and the San Jose Movie Club. Photography was a creative 
outlet for which he received many awards. He could often be found in his garden 
tending his tomatoes and fruit trees. He enjoyed sharing his fruit with others, and he 
made his own apricot and plum jam well into his eighties. Another legacy of Reed's is 
the high value he placed on education. After Dixie Jr. College he received his B. S. 
and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from the University of Utah. After serving in the U.S. 
Army during World War II, he earned his PhD at the California Institute of Technology 
in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry. He has helped and encouraged his family 
members to pursue a higher education. His professional career began as an Associate 
Chemist with the Pineapple Research Institute of Hawaii. He later worked as a 
Research Plant Physiologist at Merck Laboratory in New Jersey. The major part of his 
career from 1960 until his retirement in 1986 was spent at Stauffer Chemical Company 
in Mountain View, CA. He attained a position of honor as Senior Scientist in 1974. He 
has 24 U.S. patents, over 70 professional publications, and gave many presentations 
in the U.S. and abroad. A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ 
of Latter-day Saints, Allendale Ave., Saratoga at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 3rd.
