LYMAN BOYCE CRITTENDEN, 

Son of Artemas and Elizabeth (Boyce) Crittenden, was born, July 9, 1816, at North 
Adams, Mass. He united with the Congregational Church of Turin, N. Y., at the age of 
seventeen. He prepared for college in the preparatory department of the West- 
ern Reserve College and graduated from Centre College, Ky., in 1840. After his 
graduation he taught for a few months in the suburbs of Danville, Ky. In 1841 he 
entered the Seminary at Princeton, and remained there less than two years, ill health 
preventing the completion of his course. From the spring of 1843 to the summer of 
1844 he engaged in teaching in Talmadge, O. He was licensed, April 16, 1845, by the 
Presbytery of Wooster and ordained an evangelist, Nov. 17, 1848, by the Presbytery 
of Schuyler. He was stated supply of the churches of Northfield and Newburg, 0., 
1845-46 ; at Knoxville, 0., 1846-48 ; at Edwards, Pope's River, Millersburg, etc., 1848
-54. In this last year he became principal of the Female Seminary of Fairchild, la. In 
1857 he gave up teaching and for a year supplied the church at NcAvton, la. Ill health 
preventing his continuing in the active work of the ministry, he engaged in secular 
pursuits from 1858 to 1872, preaching occasionally. During 1872 he supplied the 
church at Corinne, Utah, for five months. 
From 1873 to 1878 he was a home missionary at Bozeman and Gallatin Valley, Mont., 
and from 1872 to 1879 was superintendent of the Gallatin Female Seminary, Gallatin 
Co., Mo. He then retired. His death occurred June 12, 1892, near Belgrade, Mont., of 
catarrh of the kidneys, in the 76th year of his age. He was a scriptural preacher, while 
he had the strength to preach, a man of unquestioned Christian integrity. Without 
being dogmatic in one sense he adhered strictly to the orthodox statement of Christian 
truth, which he believed and lived. He was married, July 12, 1842, to Miss Mary Ann 
Crittenden, who died Oct, 2, 1885. One daughter survives him.
