SWETT Benjamin
Birth: 5 May 1739 Wilmington, Pa. (now Del.)
Death: 27 Mar 1819 near Haddonfield, N.J.
Notes
1981 book:
Benjamin and Mary were Friends ministers. Mary travelled to England,
Europe, and Ireland to attend Yearly Meetings. She left on Oct. 17, 1797, and
returned on Dec. 16, 1801. Her correspondence with Benjamin is preserved in the
Friends Collections at the Haverford College Library. On occasion, she stayed with
the families of Jacob Maule (1E8) and Benjamin Maule (1E9). Few persons united
more in their character than did Mary, considered a venerable and excellent woman:
ladylike in her deportment, gentle, and endearing in her manners, yet always
displaying a consistency with her religious profession in which she was an acceptable
minister. She died lamented by a numerous company of Friends, who held her many
virtues in lasting remembrance.
Benjamin owned much land in central Pennsylvania, near Luken Valley and
Tuscarora. Benjamin died "without struggle, sigh, or groan".
